NoveList is excited to be embarking on a year-long project to look specifically at all of our genre headings. We’re going to examine how they’re being used and find ways to improve our headings to provide better information and searchability, not to mention recommendations.

While some of our genre headings have been added in response to reading and publishing trends, we have inherited many unique and highly specific genre headings over the years. As a result, we now have over 700 genres, many of which could use some TLC. Some are very broad, like Fantasy Fiction, and would benefit from more subgenres (what about Sword and Sorcery?). Others may be so narrowly defined or too rarely applied to be of any significant help for readers or librarians.

Setting aside an entire year for this genre project means that NoveList is in for some big improvements, top to bottom. What kind of improvements? Well, just to give you a little sneak peak, we’ve got big plans for romance (Highland romance, anyone?) and science fiction as well. So stay tuned, dear readers – you ain’t seen nothin yet!
