Relish: My Life in the Kitchen

by Lucy Knisley

What is it about?
Have a snack handy before you read Relish, because it's sure to make you hungry. In this charming graphic memoir, cartoonist Lucy Knisley serves up mouthwatering recipes alongside stories and memories about growing up with her chef mother and foodie father.

Why I like it:
What I enjoyed most about this book was its funny, down-to-earth tone. While the world of gourmet food can be dauntingly snobby, Knisley's upbeat attitude and appealing, retro-style illustrations are refreshingly unpretentious, giving her stories a friendly, intimate flavor and allowing her infectious enthusiasm to shine through.

Interesting tidbit:
Since it contains recipes, Relish is a multipurpose book: entertainment AND instruction. Knisley's illustrated guide to sautéing mushrooms actually made me want to give it a try, and I don't even like mushrooms.

"I'd recommend this book to…"
Though it was published as a book for adults, Relish is a great pick for older teens (who may be familiar with Knisley's brilliant webcomic summaries of the Harry Potter and Twilight series), so I was pleased to see it on the list of 2014 Alex Award winners. But really, readers of any age who are looking for culinary encouragement and inspiration will savor this delicious read.

Memorable quote:

"When we eat, we take in more than just sustenance."
