The Lucky Ones by Jenny Brown

ISBN: 9781583334416

When she was ten years old, Jenny Brown was diagnosed with bone cancer and shortly after, her leg was amputated below the knee.  In her biography, Brown tells this story in a chapter called, "The Flying Leg," which refers to what happens to her prosthesis when she attempts to do a round-off while cheerleading at a basketball game.  Brown brings this easy, self-deprecating and maybe-a-little-irreverent humor to what is really a very profound and moving story.  It’s a very engaging style of writing, both frank and sincere without ever becoming sentimental or maudlin.

After her surgery, Jenny adopts a kitten who follows her to college and the beginning of her career in film production.  Her experience with her cat, Boogie, showed her that animals have personalities and individuality and, as anyone with a cat knows, moods.  Adopting Boogie was the first step in a long journey that took her from vegetarian, to vegan, to founder of the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, a much-beloved organization that rescues farm animals and provides them with shelter for the rest of their natural lives.
