Where'd You Go, Bernadette

by Maria Semple

Written mostly as emails and letters, with the narrative filled in by eighth-grader Bee, this is an ideal book when you don’t have time to sit and read for a long period. It is a quick, fun read that manages to poke fun at the upper class (or those striving to be upper class), over-involved parents, Microsoft, and the city of Seattle.

Bernadette Fox doesn’t like people, hardly leaves her house, and has agreed to join her family (husband Elgin and daughter Bee) on a cruise to Antarctica. Anxiety about the trip causes Bernadette much stress, and the day before they are set to leave, she seemingly disappears.  With twists and turns, and filled with quirky characters, this book is a funny read with a satisfying ending.
