NoveList Adds Tools for Finding Visual Appeal

Readers have a new tool for helping to discover books they love -- a new category of appeal terms called illustration appeals. These new appeal terms are now available in all NoveList databases (including NoveList, NoveList Plus, NoveList K-8, and NoveList K-8 Plus).

Illustration appeals describe the visual impact of book illustrations. Are the drawings colorful and bold? Photographic? Or maybe dark and nightmarish? Having access to this information helps readers identify books with their favorite style of imagery. Readers who love highly visual genres such as graphic novels or picture books will now be able to pinpoint books that appeal to them visually.

Although illustration appeal terms are new, appeal terms are not. For many years, NoveList has used appeal terms to help readers find just the right books. Other kinds of appeal terms in NoveList include tone, writing style, pace, and storyline. For more information on appeal terms and how they work, download our three handouts:

These unique terms are only available through NoveList. Of course, not every record in NoveList includes illustration appeals (since not all books include illustrations!). But we’ve added illustration appeals to more than 10,000 titles in NoveList already, and will continue to add more.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on illustration appeals – join us on our Facebook page and add your comments.
